First, the pictures are beautiful, I'll give it that. But that's about it. Given we can't eat shellfish, don't like Indian spices, don't want 20 ways to eat mushrooms, and can't find such indredients as "pomegranate molasses", what have you got left? The same ole' stuff -- put together a protein, a couple of vegetables, throw in some herbs/spices of your choosing, and serve with pasta, rice, or crusty bread. No interesting cooking techniques here, so there's nothing to learn. If you are cooking for a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, good luck getting him to eat any of this. The recipes are too boring, and although healthy, I don't even think I can bring myself to make very many of these. Out of the 100 recipes in this book, I may take away about 5 (and that's being generous). This was enough to ward me away from any more Williams-Sonoma cookbooks. They look gorgeous with all of their pictures, but simple creativity in the kitchen is severely lacking. Supposedly the author of this cookbook is often sought out as a home cooking expert by local and national media. If that's the case, it certainly is not showcased in this particular book. Or it just gives us one more reason to not trust the media.
I’m not the cook in my house, but I got this as a gift for my honey. (Lucky me, Huh?) The book isn’t marketed as a DASH diet cookbook, but most of the recipes are DASH diet friendly which is what hooked me. So if your doc has recommended the DASH diet or you want to avoid/control blood pressure issues, this is a great cookbook! It’s better and much more beautiful than what is marketed under the DASH diet. I choose recipes and make weekly grocery lists from this book, so we are constantly trying new things and also making our favorites over and over again. About 50% of our dinners come from this book right now. There’s nothing too wild, but it definitely gets us to try things we wouldn’t come up with on our own. One of my photos is of the roasted salmon with avocado and grapefruit salsa. We eat salmon at least once a week but would never have prepared that ourselves. I found it in the “winter” section. The book is organized by season so it will help you to choose dishes based on seasonal ingredients, even if you don’t have that committed to memory. I’ve gifted this book to friends. You really can’t go wrong.
